Recommended starting settings

Halo exposes three deadzone numbers per stick and ships the centre one high on purpose, so that nobody's worn controller drifts. If your sticks are healthy you are paying for insurance you do not need, and dropping it is the largest single change available on a pad.

Shipped high, deliberately, so that a worn stick does not drift for anyone. If your sticks are healthy you are paying that insurance for nothing, and dropping it to the floor your hardware allows is the single largest change available on a pad in this game. Controller

Find the floor your sticks allow

Max Input Threshold 0 for movement, 10 – 12 for look 0 – 20

How close to the edge the stick has to get before the game reads maximum. At 0 on the movement stick you reach full sprint sooner; on the look stick a higher value keeps more of the travel available for aiming instead of spending it on the fastest turn. Controller

Axial Deadzone 1 – 3 0 – 20

A cross-shaped dead area along the two axes, which makes a stick snap to straight lines. Useful on the movement stick, where strafing should be straight; harmful on the look stick, where it stops you from aiming slightly off horizontal. Controller

How quickly a held stick builds to its top turn speed. Halo needs a real turn more than most shooters because the grapple and the vehicles put things behind you, so zero is not the automatic answer it is elsewhere. Controller

Bumper Jumper is worth more in this game than in most, because clambering happens on the jump press: keeping your thumb on the stick while jumping means you can aim through a mantle. Every preset also has a Southpaw version, which is a courtesy the rest of this library mostly does not extend. Controller

Crouch Behavior Mobility Toggle HoldToggle

Halo's crouch is a slide out of a sprint, which is a tap, and a held crouch behind cover, which is minutes. A toggle serves both; a hold only serves the second one.

Three options rather than two. Press is the hidden middle: one tap in, one tap out, without the toggle's habit of zooming you back in when you tap again on instinct.

78 is a console default that survived onto PC and it hides the flank that Halo's maps are built around. Above 110 the weapon model shrinks enough to hurt, which is where most players stop.

Nothing in this layout is unusual on its own. What catches people is that Halo puts melee, grenade and ability on different keys from the shooters they came from, so a hand trained on anything else presses the wrong one for the first few matches. That single fact answers most searches about these controls, and the reason it is not V is that Halo grew up on a controller where melee sits under the right thumb — the PC layout inherited the shape rather than the convention. If your hand refuses to relearn it, move melee to a mouse side button and leave everything else alone: Q is worth keeping where it is, because the grappleshot is used far more often than any melee.
