All default controls & keybinds

Verified 2026-09-21. The controller column is Layout 1, the default. That is what every published control table for this game is describing without saying so.

Driving essentials

W

Accelerate

Controller · RT

On a keyboard this is on or off. There is no partial throttle.

S

Brake / Reverse

Controller · LT

Held past a standstill it becomes reverse.

Space

E-brake

Controller · A

The single most searched binding this game has.

The question nobody finishes asking

“What button is accelerate?” depends on the layout.

The controls menu offers numbered input mappings. 14 exist; 5 are documented anywhere at all. The last column is the one no control guide prints — how many separate physical controls the driving loop occupies.

LayoutAccelerateBrakeSteerControls usedWhy you would
1 · Triggers (default) RT LT Left stick 3 The default, and the one every published control table is secretly describing. Throttle and brake are analogue because triggers report a range.
8 · Face buttons, A and X A X Left stick 3 Moves throttle and brake to the face buttons. They become on/off — a pad driving like a keyboard — but the triggers are freed and the thumb never leaves the right cluster.
9 · Face buttons, A and B A B Left stick 3 The same trade as Layout 8 with brake on B instead of X, which keeps both driving buttons on the right-hand side of the face cluster.
12 · Right stick Right stick up Right stick down Left stick 2 Throttle and brake return to an analogue axis without using triggers at all. One stick per hand, nothing else required to drive.
14 · One stick Left stick up Left stick down Left stick 1 Steering, throttle and brake on the same stick. The entire driving loop fits on one thumb, and it stays analogue.
Gap The other 9 layouts exist in the menu and their mappings are published nowhere. They are not listed because inventing them would be the same error this section corrects.

The D-pad is a layer

Four directions, 11 actions.

This is why the same direction appears more than once in every published table for this game. It is not a data error — pressing D-pad down opens the assistant and every direction changes meaning.

Contested Two published tables give D-pad down to the assistant and to the mini leaderboard, on the same layer, with nothing said about which wins. The likeliest separation is that the leaderboard only exists during an event, but no source states it and we are not going to be the first to assert it.

How the controls work

Every default binding for Forza Horizon 6 on keyboard and on the default controller layout, with the part no other table carries: the game ships at least fourteen numbered controller layouts and four of them move accelerate and brake off the triggers, so a controller table is only true once the layout is named. Rows the published record disagrees about are marked rather than quietly resolved.

Keyboard versus controller

A stick reports a steering value anywhere between full left and full right, and a trigger reports a throttle value anywhere between nothing and everything. A keyboard reports three steering states and two throttle states. The game smooths keyboard input so it plays well, but no setting turns two states into a range — which is the whole of the difference.

Can the controls be remapped?

Yes, in two separate ways worth keeping apart. The numbered layouts rearrange the driving controls for you, and are the faster answer for most people. Every action can also be rebound by hand, and the game stores up to five custom profiles.

Manual shifting

Set the transmission to Manual, or Manual with Clutch, before touching the shift bindings: they do nothing while it is automatic. On a keyboard that is E and Q with the clutch on Shift. On the default controller layout shift up is B, and shift down is the one row the published record genuinely disagrees about.

Camera controls

The camera toggle is Tab on a keyboard and the right bumper on a pad, with the four arrow keys and the right stick looking around. One published guide prints the keyboard camera as C; C is the assistant, and two other sources print Tab.

Frequently asked controls questions

The questions people actually type.

Why are my controls not working in Forza Horizon 6?

Work outwards from the device rather than from the settings. First find out whether the machine sees the device at all — a browser can enumerate connected pads and wheels, and if nothing appears there the game will not see one either. If the device is seen but the game ignores it, the usual causes are a compatibility layer overriding the mapping on a storefront release, a driver or firmware version older than the game, or another device holding the first slot. Only after the device is confirmed present is it worth changing anything in the controls menu.

Why is my controller not detected on PC?

Connect it by cable rather than wirelessly for the test, plug it directly into the machine rather than through a hub, and check whether anything else is connected that also reports as a game device. A wheel, a pedal set and a pad can all be enumerated, and which one arrives first decides which one some software treats as the main device. Our lab lists the order your own machine reports, which is the same diagnosis the official troubleshooting asks you to perform by unplugging things one at a time.

What is the handbrake key in Forza Horizon 6?

Space on a keyboard, and A on the default controller layout. It is listed in the game as the e-brake. On a keyboard it is the one driving input that is genuinely better than its controller equivalent, because a handbrake is a yes-or-no action and a key is a yes-or-no control.

How do I shift manually?

Set the transmission to Manual, or Manual with Clutch, in the difficulty menu first — the shift bindings do nothing while the transmission is automatic. On a keyboard shifting is E and Q with the clutch on Shift. On the default controller layout shift up is B; shift down is the one row published sources genuinely disagree about, with two printing it as unbound and one tested write-up reporting X, so check what your own layout shows.

Can I change the controller layout in Forza Horizon 6?

Yes, in two different ways, and they are worth separating. The controls menu offers numbered layout presets that rearrange the driving controls for you — several move accelerate and brake off the triggers entirely, and one puts steering, throttle and brake on the same stick. Separately, every action can be remapped by hand, and the game stores up to five custom profiles.

Does Forza Horizon 6 support racing wheels?

Yes, and the publisher maintains a tested device list covering roughly sixty models across eight brands with separate columns for PC and Xbox. The distinction that matters is not supported versus unsupported but full versus partial: a partial entry means something like force feedback working while the button mappings are absent, and seventeen models on the list are marked as waiting on further support.

Why does my wheel have no force feedback?

Because force feedback is sent to whichever device the game registers first, and something else took that slot. Pedals on a separate USB port, a shifter, or a controller left connected can all be enumerated ahead of the wheelbase. The remedy is to disconnect the others, plug the wheelbase straight into the machine rather than through a hub, and confirm the steering input responds in the advanced wheel settings before plugging anything else back in.

Is keyboard or controller better for Forza Horizon 6?

A controller, and the reason is a number rather than a preference. A stick reports a continuous steering value and a trigger reports a continuous throttle; a keyboard gives steering three states and throttle two. The game smooths keyboard input so it is entirely playable, but the ceiling is lower on anything that rewards holding a partial input — long corners, wet surfaces, and anything involving a slide. The one place a keyboard wins is the assistant: what costs a pad two presses costs a keyboard one.

What is drone mode and how do I open it?

It is a free camera you fly around the world. On a keyboard the assistant is C and drone mode is 1. On a controller it is a two-step chord: D-pad down to open the assistant, then D-pad up. That two-step pattern is how all four assistant options work on a pad, which is why the same D-pad direction appears more than once in every published control table.

How do I stop the game switching between keyboard and controller?

The game follows whichever device produced input most recently, so the switching is usually a device sending small amounts of input on its own — a stick resting off centre, or a trigger that does not return fully. Measure the resting values rather than guessing: a stick that reports movement at rest will keep pulling focus back to the pad no matter what is changed in the game. If the resting drift is real, a small inside deadzone on the affected axis is what that setting is genuinely for.
