Action maps
Why the same key appears four times.
The documentation says it in one line at the foot of the bindings page, and no published
control list for this game repeats it: a key can appear more than
once when different action maps or contexts use the same control. Of
160 default bindings, 18 keys are shared. They are not
duplicates and they are not a mistake in the table — they are different contexts, and which
one is listening depends on what is open in front of you.

Frequently asked
The questions people actually type.
What are the default driving controls in BeamNG.drive?
The arrow keys. Up is throttle, Down is brake, Left and Right steer, and Space is the parking brake held down. W, A, S and D are not driving keys in this game — they move the camera. Most published control lists for BeamNG highlight WASD anyway, which is the single most common error about it. All of these can be rebound in Options > Controls, and the changes are saved as .diff files that override the defaults rather than replacing them.
How do you reset or recover a vehicle in BeamNG.drive?
There are four separate actions and they do different things. Insert repairs the vehicle and rewinds it out of where it ended up. Home repairs it and returns it to a position you saved earlier with Ctrl + Home. R restarts the current mission or vehicle. Shift + R resets the physics of every vehicle in the world. Insert and Home are the pair that get swapped in guides: pressing Home without having saved a position first has nowhere to take you.
What key pauses physics in BeamNG.drive?
J. It is the Pause action and it stops the simulation where it is, which is what people mean when they ask about pausing physics mid-crash. It is worth knowing that the documentation files it under General rather than Gameplay, which is why it is absent from most lists of BeamNG physics controls.
Why does the same key do different things in BeamNG?
Because the game groups bindings into eleven action maps and a key can appear in several of them. The arrow keys steer a car in the Vehicle map, pan the big map in the Camera map, seek back and forth in Replay, and move a selection in the Editor. Tab switches vehicle and also toggles the minimap. Escape opens the menu, the camera list, the logs and the details panel. Published control lists print these as duplicate rows without explanation; they are not duplicates, they are different contexts, and which one is listening depends on what is open.
How do you use the node grabber in BeamNG.drive?
Hold Ctrl and the vehicle under your cursor draws every node as a sphere. Hold the left mouse button to grab one, and the mouse wheel changes the strength of that grab while you hold it. The middle mouse button then does three different things depending on where you are: in open space it pins the node, over another node it attaches the two, and on an already attached node it detaches them. Nothing about the button tells you which — the on-screen label does, by changing colour.
Does BeamNG.drive support steering wheels and force feedback?
Yes, for any PC-compatible wheel, and the publisher maintains a table of 112 tested devices. 62 of them support force feedback and 103 arrive with in-game controls already assigned, which are two different things: a direct-drive base can have force feedback and no bindings at all. Xbox-branded wheels need PC mode or force feedback will not work. Force feedback is also supported for the first axis of a joystick.
Why is my steering wheel not detected in BeamNG.drive?
The publisher's own first answer is Steam rather than the game: Steam hides some devices from the operating system while certain games run. Turn off PS4, Xbox and Generic Gamepad Configuration Support in Big Picture's controller settings, or set Steam Input to Forced Off for BeamNG specifically. If the device is detected but nothing responds, it simply has no premade bindings and the controls need assigning in Options > Controls. And the Windows driver window has to be closed before BeamNG starts, and left closed while it runs.
Why does my car steer by itself in BeamNG.drive?
Usually the wheel or stick is reporting movement while nobody is touching it, and a small centre deadzone is what that setting is genuinely for. The publisher also names two other causes worth ruling out first: a vehicle mod that altered the suspension, and powerful cars that genuinely pull under acceleration. If it is the hardware, calibrate from the Windows Control Panel driver window — some wheels only calibrate after being unplugged and reconnected.
Why is my steering so fast and twitchy in BeamNG.drive?
The wheel is not set to its full rotation, so a small movement asks for a large angle. Set 900 or 1080 degrees — or whatever your hardware supports — and set the same number in-game. Two places hold that figure and the fault is them disagreeing. On a Logitech G25 or G27 it can be changed during play with the two middle red buttons on the H-shifter together with the bottom black button.
Why does my BeamNG car go into reverse after braking to a stop?
That is Arcade shifting mode doing what it is designed to do. Press Q to switch to Realistic shifting and the car will stay stopped instead.

New: ask me anything about this siteWhich test to run, a game's default keybinds, what a result means.
KayeeKeymap Labs assistant
I answer from this site only — the 28 browser tests, the controls library for 46 games, the sensitivity converters and the two games. I can tell you which page to open, how a tool works and what its result means.
I will not guess. If something is not on the site, I will say so.
