AION 2 · First-choices lab · Checked 1 October 2026

AION 2 control mode, controller and class — settled before your first quest.

Meet the same six targets in AION 2 mode and AION 1 mode, see the controller’s layers change as you hold its triggers, rank the eight classes for how you like to play, and read NC’s server rules against your own plan.

AION 2 mode or AION 1 mode? Meet the same six targets both ways.

AION 2 starts in AION 2 mode: the cursor disappears, the mouse turns the camera and you hit whatever sits under the reticle. AION 1 mode keeps the cursor — click a target to pick it, double-click to attack, drag to turn. A shortcut switches at any time. Six targets hang in the sky around you; clear them in each mode and see which one your hand is faster in.

This page’s own sky: one hit per target, no skills, no ranges and the same targets in both rounds. It compares your two ways of aiming, not the game’s combat. On a touchscreen both modes turn the view with a drag.

Twenty slots, three held buttons — hold LT, RT or RB and the pad changes.

NC’s controller table puts two skills on the face buttons and everything else behind a held trigger or bumper. Plug in a controller and hold each one: the layout below switches with your hands, and each slot lights as you fire it. No controller? Pick a layer by hand. A controller works in AION 2 but NC does not officially support one, and the layout cannot be changed.

The table is NC’s own, from the AION 2 guidebook’s controller page (BETA), translated; button names are an Xbox controller’s. Nothing on the controller can be remapped in the game.

Eight classes — which one is yours?

Three questions, and the eight classes the global launch has are ranked by how well each fits. The descriptions are NC’s own: who fights at the front, who heals, who buffs, and what each one swings or casts with.

Where do you want to fight?
What do you want to do in a group?
How do you like to fight?
  1. Gladiator The battlefield commander with a greatsword

High attack and defence. A front-line damage dealer whose warrior health lets it step in as the second tank.

Greatsword Up close Damage Also tank
  2. Templar The iron wall that shields its allies

The classic tank: its own defence plus skills that take enemy attacks off the rest of the party, at the front of every group.

Sword and shield Up close Tank
  3. Assassin The blade that finishes its work in the shadows

Hides, then strikes from behind. Fast attacks chained with poisons and stuns.

    Two daggers Up close Damage
  4. Ranger An eagle’s eye on the battlefield

Strong attacks from long range, and from that distance a wide view of the fight to react to.

    Bow At range Damage
  5. Sorcerer Absolute firepower from explosive magic

Burst damage in a short window. Low health and defence, so it uses control spells to finish enemies before they close in.

    Spellbook At range Damage
  6. Spiritmaster The conductor who fights with spirits

Summons spirits of different elements that deal its damage, and wears enemies down with ailments and damage over time.

    Orb At range Damage
  7. Cleric The saviour who keeps the party alive

The classic healer: restores the party’s health whatever happens, and no group goes far without one.

    Mace At range Healer
  8. Chanter The sage who turns the tide

Buffs the whole party’s stats, fights with ailments, and covers as a second healer or a second damage dealer.

Staff Up close Support Also healer

Answer the three questions and the best fit rises to the top.

A fit to your answers, not a tier list: the ranking reads NC’s guidebook descriptions — each class’s role, the role it can also take, its range and its way of fighting — and says nothing about which class is strongest this patch.

Before you make a character: region, faction, server.

You pick a region first, then a faction, then a server — and every server holds one faction only, each Elyos server paired with an Asmodian one. NC’s transfer rule decides how much that first choice matters, so tell it your plan.

Make a second character on their server

NC says early-access characters can transfer only between early-access servers. If your friends play on a server that opened at launch, your early-access character can never move to it — make a second character with them on their server.

  • One faction per server. Elyos and Asmodians meet in shared PvP spaces such as the Abyss.
  • Transfers from 14 October, free at first, within your faction only.
  • Early access stays in early access. Those characters can move only between early-access servers.
  • Dungeons are cross-server. All instanced content is open across servers.
  • Steam and PURPLE share every server. Link the accounts only to keep one character on both.
  • In Southeast Asia set PURPLE’s region to Global first: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand.

Straight answers

The launch-week questions about control modes, the controller, classes and servers, answered from NC’s own guidebook and notices.

Which control mode is better in AION 2?

Neither is better for everyone. AION 2 mode, the default, hides the cursor and aims with the centre reticle — the camera follows the mouse and the keyboard moves you. AION 1 mode keeps the cursor: click to move, click to target, drag to turn. A shortcut switches at any time, so try both; a controller plays in AION 2 mode only.

Does AION 2 support a controller?

It plays with one, but NC says controllers are not officially supported on the global service. The layout is fixed: X and Y are the first two skills, LT with the face buttons fires skills 3 to 6, RB with X or Y skills 7 and 8, RT the four stigmas, and LT or RT with the D-pad the eight item slots.

Which class should I play in AION 2?

Start from what you want to do in a group. Templar is the tank and Gladiator a damage dealer that can tank second; Assassin strikes from stealth; Ranger, Sorcerer and Spiritmaster deal damage from range — steady, in bursts, or through summoned spirits; Cleric heals; Chanter buffs and covers as a second healer or damage dealer.

Does my server matter in AION 2?

For playing with friends, yes. Each server holds one faction, transfers open on 14 October within one faction, and NC says early-access characters can move only between early-access servers — not to the servers that open at launch. Dungeons and other instanced content are open across servers.

How do you fly and glide in AION 2?

V opens your wings and closes them; you steer in the air the way you move on the ground, and Shift flies faster. Space switches to a glide, a slow descent where holding W speeds it up. Flight and glide share one cooldown and drain your flight gauge.
