The same account on three devices, and one thumb doing two jobs

Nobody plays a tactical shooter on a phone. Genshin players play on a PC at home and on a phone on a train, with the same team, and switch back and forth for years. So the useful question is what your hands have to relearn — and the answer is structural. On a keyboard and on a pad, switching character and attacking sit on different limbs and can overlap. On a phone they are both the right thumb, and this game’s whole loop is switch, skill, switch, burst.

Which limb performs your combat loop, on each device

Only the combat loop is compared — the map key is the same problem everywhere and comparing it would be true and pointless. Everything below is derived from the three verified layouts behind /controls/genshin-impact/ rather than written by hand.

Jump / climb / glide, Sprint / dash, Normal attack, Charged attack, Elemental skill, Elemental burst, Switch character 1–4 are all on the right thumb on mobile. On a keyboard the same set is spread across 2 limbs and on a pad across two, which is why a rotation that flows on a PC feels like a queue on a phone. It is not latency and it is not skill — one thumb cannot press two things at once, so it travels instead.

The model, stated plainly A keyboard’s left block and number row are the left hand and the mouse is the right. On a pad the sticks and D-pad are thumbs, the shoulders and triggers are fingers. On a phone the layout is whatever the verified entry actually describes and nothing more: “On phones the left thumb has a virtual stick, the right side has attack, skill, burst, jump and sprint buttons around the crosshair, and character portraits sit on the right edge for switching. Layouts can be resized in Settings › Controls › Custom Layout.” Anything that sentence does not cover is left blank rather than guessed.
02 / Thumb arc

Where your thumb actually reaches on this screen

Genshin is one of very few games that lets you move and resize its on-screen buttons — Settings › Controls › Custom Layout. That is only useful if you know where your thumb genuinely goes, and almost nobody knows that about their own hand.

Hold the phone the way you actually hold it, then sweep your thumb across the screen as far as it comfortably reaches. The page draws the arc in this screen’s own pixels, so nothing needs calibrating: the buttons live on the same screen the measurement was taken on.

Press and sweep here.

Sweep your thumb

Rest your hand as you actually hold the phone, then sweep your thumb across the screen as far as it comfortably goes.

Move the burst, not the attack

Attack is pressed constantly and lives comfortably wherever your thumb rests. The burst is pressed once a rotation and is the one that gets missed — so if something has to sit at the edge of your arc, it should be the button you press least, not the one you press most.

The portraits are the real cost

Switching character is on the same thumb as attacking, so every switch is a journey the thumb takes and comes back from. Pulling the portraits closer to your arc costs you nothing and shortens every rotation you will ever do.

On PC there is nothing to move

The keyboard layout is fixed in the same way and does not need fixing: the two halves of the loop are already on separate hands. That is the whole difference, and it is why a rotation that flows at a desk feels like a queue on a train.

Straight answers

Why do Genshin rotations feel slower on a phone?+

Because of a limb, not latency and not skill. On a keyboard, switching character is the left hand on 1–4 while attacking is the right hand on the mouse, so the two halves of a rotation can overlap. On a controller they are the left thumb on the D-pad and the right thumb on a face button. On a phone both the character portraits and the attack button are on the right side, so one thumb has to do both — and one thumb cannot press two things at once, so it travels between them instead.

Can I move the buttons in Genshin Impact on mobile?+

Yes, and it is one of very few games that lets you: Settings › Controls › Custom Layout lets you move and resize the on-screen controls. That makes the layout a real decision rather than something to put up with — which is why this page measures where your thumb actually reaches, since that is the information the decision needs.

Which Genshin buttons should I move on mobile?+

The ones you press least, outward; the ones you press most, inward. Attack is pressed constantly and should sit wherever your thumb rests. The burst is pressed once a rotation and is the one that gets missed, so it is the better candidate for the edge of your reach. The character portraits are worth pulling closer than anything else, because every switch is a journey your thumb makes and comes back from.

Is Genshin better with a controller or keyboard?+

They are close, and for a different reason than people usually give. On both, the combat loop is spread across two limbs, so nothing queues up behind anything else. The keyboard gives you four characters on four separate keys and a mouse for aiming; the controller gives you the D-pad and a face button. The real gap in this game is not keyboard against controller, it is either of them against one thumb.

Does switching between PC and mobile hurt my Genshin muscle memory?+

Less than you would expect for the buttons and more than you would expect for the rhythm. The actions map onto each other cleanly — attack is attack — so nothing has to be relearned as a fact. What changes is which limb performs it and therefore what can happen at the same time, and that is a timing habit rather than a memory. The table on this page lays the three layouts out side by side so you can see which of your habits transfer and which do not.

Does this page know anything about characters?+

No, deliberately. Nothing here depends on who is in your team — the loop being described is switch, skill, switch, burst, which is the same shape whoever you play. This site has not verified character data and will not invent it.

No character data appears anywhere — the loop measured here is the same whoever is in your team.
