Stardew Valley controller not working? Why it will not rebind

The rebinding screen in this game does not rebind your controller.

Stardew lets you remap every key on a keyboard and not one button on a pad — the options screen everybody screenshots is keyboard-only. There is no cursor sensitivity setting either. Which means that when the right stick does a mouse's job, the only two things left in the whole equation are your hand and your stick. This bench measures both.

The short answer

  • The in-game rebinding screen changes keyboard keys only; no controller button can be remapped inside Stardew Valley.
  • PlayStation: Settings → Accessibility → Button Assignments.
  • Switch: System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Change Button Mapping.
  • Xbox: the Xbox Accessories app, per controller profile.
  • PC: Steam’s controller configurator, which needs Steam Input on — and that switches off the game’s own pad support.
Measure your thumb on the stick →

Park the cursor on the square. Then hold it there

Drive the cursor with the right stick, the way you would place a chest or a path tile. It counts when you have held it inside the square for 300 ms, which is the half of this that placing furniture actually needs. 4 attempts before the numbers mean anything.

Controller Not seen This module needs a controller plugged into the device you are reading on — it measures a stick, and a keyboard has none. Everything else on this page reads fine without one.

What this will not tell you How fast the cursor moves in the game. A browser reads the stick, not Stardew, and the cursor speed here is a constant this page picked — because the game exposes no sensitivity setting to match, there is no number to match it to. What transfers is the shape of the movement rather than its scale: whether you travel past a target before coming back, and whether the cursor stays where you put it. The square counts as hit within 0.08 of its centre in stick units.

The options screen remaps keyboard keys only

This is the finding the whole page is built on, and it is stated once per platform in the game's own documentation and nowhere else. Every control guide shows the rebinding screen. None of them says what it will not rebind.

PlatformIn game?Where you can, instead
PC no Steam’s own controller configurator, or a system remapper. Note that Steam Input must be OFF for the game’s built-in support to work, so the two approaches are exclusive.
PlayStation no Settings → Accessibility → Button Assignments. A system setting, applied to every game, and nothing in Stardew points at it.
Switch no System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Change Button Mapping. Same shape, same silence.
Xbox no The Xbox Accessories app, per controller profile.
Why this matters more here than in most games Every route above is a system setting. It applies to every game on the machine, it lives several menus away from anything Stardew shows you, and a player who changes it will find their other games remapped too. That is a real cost, and it is the only option this game leaves.

The stick that moves the cursor changes

In the world the cursor is on the right stick. In a menu it is on the left one. The game does not announce the swap, and it is why an inventory feels unfamiliar for a second every single time you open one.

Rightin the world

Cursor, and more

The same stick clicks to open chat and is held to open the emote wheel — three jobs on one stick, and the cursor is the one you are using when the other two fire by accident.

Leftin a menu

Cursor, while the right one scrolls

They swap roles the moment a menu opens. Nothing on screen says so, which is the whole reason it feels wrong rather than merely different.

Right stick placement

Not a toggle — the thing the manual never says. The right stick places furniture, rugs and windows to the exact tile, which is the one job the pad does better than the mouse. Most people find it by accident in year three.

Steam Input has to be off

The game's own full controller support needs Steam Input disabled for that title. Left on, the two layers fight and the pad half-works — which is the state most people describing "Stardew controller not working" are actually in.

Offper game

Steam → Properties → Controller

Set this game's controller setting to disabled rather than the Steam default. Then the game reads the pad directly, which is the mode its own documentation describes.

Orthe other way

Leave it on, and rebind there

The honest alternative: keep Steam Input on and use its configurator as the remapper the game does not have. You give up the native support and gain the rebinding — it is a trade, not a fix.

Auto-detectOptions

Gamepad Mode

Auto-detect drops back to mouse the moment the pad idles, which is what you want on a desk with both. Force on keeps the cursor snapping to menu buttons even when a hand brushes the mouse — the right answer on a TV.

What the game does let you set

A short list, and worth knowing precisely because it is short — everything not on it is a system setting or nothing at all.

OnOptions

Auto Run

On by default and worth leaving there. Off means holding a button to move at a speed you will want for the entire game, which is a finger spent on nothing.

OffOptions

Controller Rumble

Fires on tool swings, which is most of the day. It tires the hands over a long session and tells you nothing the animation has not already told you.

OnOptions

Invert Toolbar Scroll Direction

By default pushing the right stick down moves the toolbar selection to the right, which is backwards from every list you have ever scrolled. Inverting it costs nothing and removes a daily half-second of thinking.

Asked about these controls

The questions this page can answer.

Can you rebind controller buttons in Stardew Valley?

No. The remapping section in the Options menu remaps keyboard keys only — the game has no controller rebinding at all, and it says so once per platform in its own documentation and nowhere in the menu itself. The only route is your platform’s own remapper: PlayStation’s Settings → Accessibility → Button Assignments, the Switch’s System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Change Button Mapping, the Xbox Accessories app, or Steam’s configurator on PC. Every one of those is a system setting that applies to all your games, not just this one.

Why does my controller not work properly in Stardew Valley?

Most often because Steam Input is on. The game’s own full controller support needs it disabled for that title, and with both layers active the pad half-works — which is the state most “controller not working” reports are actually describing. Either turn Steam Input off for Stardew and use the native support, or leave it on and use Steam’s configurator as the remapper the game does not have. You cannot have both.

Can you change cursor sensitivity on a controller in Stardew Valley?

There is no setting for it. The right stick drives a floating cursor at a fixed speed with nothing to tune, which is why placing furniture and paths with a pad is a known chore and why the game’s own wiki carries a section of workarounds for it. The only variables left are your hand and your stick — the bench on this page measures both.

Which stick moves the cursor in Stardew Valley?

The right stick in the world and the left stick inside a menu. They swap roles the moment a menu opens and nothing on screen announces it, which is why an inventory feels unfamiliar for a second every time. In the world the right stick also clicks to open chat and is held to open the emote wheel, so three jobs share one stick.
