Which button confirms?

Xbox confirms with A, the bottom button. PlayStation confirms with Cross, also at the bottom — worldwide since the PS5; Japanese PS4 and older games used Circle. Nintendo confirms with A, which sits on the right. So a menu that says “A to confirm” means the bottom button on Xbox and the right one on Switch.

PlayStation prompts in PC games

Most recent PC games switch their prompts when they see a DualSense or DualShock. If a game keeps showing Xbox letters, look for a button prompt setting in its controller options. With Steam Input on, Steam translates the controller to an Xbox one for games that do not support PlayStation pads — the buttons work, the prompts stay Xbox.

Back buttons and paddles

  • Xbox Elite Series 2 — P1, P2, P3, P4 (paddles)
  • DualSense Edge — Left and right back buttons, two Fn buttons
  • Switch 2 Pro Controller — GL, GR (back buttons), C (chat)
  • Steam Deck — L4, L5, R4, R5 (back grips), Quick Access (…)

Browsers and most games never see these as separate buttons: the controller maps each one onto a standard button, so they appear here as whatever you assigned them to.

Every controls page on this site lists a game’s buttons for PlayStation, Xbox and Switch side by side: Fortnite, Call of Duty, EA SPORTS FC 27, Elden Ring, Rocket League, GTA V — all controls pages.

Quick answers before you test

What is LB on PS5?

L1, the left shoulder button. RB is R1, LT is L2 and RT is R2. On a Switch they are L, R, ZL and ZR.

What is A on PlayStation?

Cross (×), the bottom face button. B is Circle, X is Square and Y is Triangle. On a Switch the bottom button is B, not A.

What are View and Menu on PS5?

View is Create (Share on PS4) and Menu is Options. On a Switch they are Minus and Plus.

What the result actually measures

Every controller reports its buttons to a PC in the same order: the bottom face button first, then right, left and top, the shoulders, the triggers, the two centre buttons, the stick presses, the d-pad and the home button. That order is how PC games and Steam Input carry a prompt from one controller to another, so it is the order this page converts by. Press a button on any of the three drawn pads — or on a real controller — and the same button lights on the other two. Switch to “by printed letter” to pair Xbox and Nintendo letters instead, which is where the A and B swap shows.

Measurement boundary: The names are the controllers’ own, as printed and as each console’s settings call them; a game can still rename its prompts. Back paddles and extra buttons are mapped by the controller onto standard buttons before a game or browser sees them, so they cannot be told apart here.

How to interpret the output

By position

The same physical button. Xbox A, PlayStation Cross and Nintendo B are all the bottom face button, and that is what a PC game means when it shows A on a PlayStation pad.

By printed letter

The same letter. Xbox A is at the bottom but Nintendo A is on the right, so “press A” is a different thumb movement on a Switch.

Confirm and cancel

Xbox confirms with A and PlayStation with Cross, both at the bottom. Nintendo confirms with A on the right, so menus feel mirrored when you switch.

Troubleshooting unexpected results

My controller does not light anything

Press a button once after the page has loaded; browsers only hand a controller to a page after it is used. The drawings work without one.

A game still shows Xbox letters on my DualSense

Look for a button prompt setting in the game’s controller options. With Steam Input on, many games receive the pad as an Xbox controller and keep Xbox prompts, though every button still works.

A and B are reversed on my Switch Pro on PC

Steam Input can use either the printed letters or the positions for Nintendo pads. Change “Use Nintendo button layout” in Steam’s controller settings to swap them.

Frequently asked questions

What is LB on a PS5 controller?

L1 — the left shoulder button above the left trigger. RB is R1.

What is RT on PlayStation?

R2, the right trigger. LT is L2.

What is the X button on PlayStation?

The Xbox X button, on the left of the face buttons, is Square on PlayStation. The PlayStation button marked with a cross is Xbox A.

What is Y on PlayStation?

Triangle, the top face button.

Why are A and B swapped on Nintendo controllers?

Nintendo kept the layout of its 1990 Super Nintendo pad, where A is on the right and B at the bottom. Xbox put A at the bottom, so the same letters sit on different buttons.

What is the View button on PS5?

Create, the small button left of the touchpad (Share on a PS4). The Xbox Menu button is Options.
