Deadlock controls & keybinds

Deadlock moves on W, A, S and D with Space to jump and mantle, Left Shift to dash and Left Ctrl to crouch and slide. Q melees — hold it for a heavy melee — F parries, 1 to 4 cast your abilities and Z, X, C and V your active items. Valve publishes no controls list; the few defaults no source states yet are listed as unconfirmed rather than guessed.

Settings that change how the bindings feel

Recommended starting settings

Deadlock's Keybinds menu is not one list. A bind can be set for one hero only, and that is where most "my keybinds don't save" reports come from: the bind did save, on the hero that was selected when you changed it.

Keybinds → Hero-Specific

Hero-specific keybinds Off until you need one hero to differ

On, the Abilities and Items lists below edit the hero picked at the top. A red hero icon marks a hero with a critical bind left empty — the cause of the "Critical keybind missing" warning many players saw after 30 September 2026. PC

Keybinds → Abilities

Alternate cast mode Per hero

The City Never Sleeps update made the mode per hero and reset it for players who had changed it; set it again on the heroes where you used it. PC

Keybinds → Communication

Chat menu delay 0 – 0.5 s

How long the ping button has to be held before the chat wheel opens. Shorter opens the wheel sooner but turns more quick pings into wheels. PC

Reach check · your keyboard, this game

Can your board actually play Deadlock?

Every default bind, re-scored against the keyboard you own. Distance is measured from the left hand resting on WASD, because that is where it stays while you play.

A 60% board has every key Deadlock asks for. 3 of its 21 default binds still need the left hand to leave WASD, so the board is not what holds you back here — the layout is. How that compares with every other game.

Quick answers

What are the default keybinds in Deadlock?

Move on W, A, S and D, jump and mantle with Space, dash with Left Shift and crouch or slide with Left Ctrl. Q is melee, F is parry, R reloads, 1 to 4 are your abilities with 4 the ultimate, and Z, X, C and V use your four active items. B opens the shop, Mouse 3 pings and Tab shows the scoreboard.

What is the parry key in Deadlock?

F. The same key boosts your speed while you ride a zipline. A parry catches melee hits for the first 0.75 seconds of a one-second animation, and a parry that catches nothing cannot be used again for 4.5 seconds.

How do you melee in Deadlock?

Press Q for a light melee and hold it for a heavy melee. A heavy melee winds up first, then lunges about half a dash forward, which is why it can be seen coming and parried.

What does F do in Deadlock?

It parries a melee attack, and while you ride a zipline it activates the zipline speed boost.

What are the item keys in Deadlock?

Z, X, C and V for the four active-item slots, and E for the seasonal event item. Hold Tab or Alt and drag an item to move it to another slot.

How do you ping in Deadlock?

Press Mouse 3, the middle button. Hold it and the chat wheel opens after a delay you can set from 0 to 0.5 seconds in the Keybinds menu.

What is the reload key in Deadlock?

R, as in most shooters. It sits under Keybinds → Combat if you want it somewhere else.

How do you open the shop in Deadlock?

Press B. You buy at a shop on the map: stand in front of it, inside the small yellow rectangle in front of the counter, and press the key.

Why do my Deadlock keybinds not save?

Usually they did, for one hero. With Hero-specific keybinds on, a change applies to the hero selected at the top of the menu. The keybinds lab walks through this and the Critical keybind missing warning.
