Earth Defense Force 5 came out in 2017 on PlayStation 4 in Japan and in 2019 on PS4 and Steam worldwide. Since 8 October 2026 it is on Nintendo Switch 2, ported by Yuke's, at $29.99 or $39.99 for the Deluxe Edition: two-player split-screen on the TV, four players over local wireless, four online, gyro aiming and a button layout reworked to match EDF 6. Two mission packs follow in November and December, and EDF 6 comes to Switch 2 on 28 January 2027.

Nothing has been announced for the Switch 2 version. Its co-op runs between Switch 2 consoles: split-screen, local wireless and online.

The Steam minimum is a GeForce GTX 760 or Radeon HD 7970 with a Core i5-4440 or A10-7850K; the recommended card is a GTX 970 or RX 480 with a Core i7-4770 or Ryzen 5 1400. Both ask for 8 GB of RAM, 30 GB of space and 64-bit Windows 7, 8.1 or 10. The PC version has split-screen for two as well.
Four: the Ranger, an all-round infantry soldier; the Wing Diver, who flies on an energy gauge; the Fencer, a heavy suit with a weapon on each arm; and the Air Raider, who calls in vehicles and support. Each has its own controls.
