Mouse DPI Measurement Error: Why Runs Disagree

Understand why browser DPI estimates vary and use distance, repeated runs and spread to make the result more useful.

The physical ruler is part of the measurement system

A one-millimeter start or stop error is ten percent of a one-centimeter run but only one percent of a ten-centimeter run. Longer straight travel reduces the relative influence of hand placement and mark thickness.

Use two fixed marks, keep the mouse sensor on the surface and avoid lifting. Repeat at least three times without changing the distance, software profile or browser state. The median is more defensible than selecting whichever run matches the advertised DPI.

Observed movement is not guaranteed raw sensor counts

The page receives movement after the device, firmware, connection, operating system and browser. Pointer lock can improve the workflow, but it does not promise a raw hardware counter in every environment.

Operating-system acceleration, pointer scaling, vendor software, browser zoom and device pixel ratio can all complicate interpretation. Record those conditions before comparing the estimate with a product label.

Use spread as a procedure warning

If repeated estimates have a large range relative to their median, the current procedure is not stable enough for a precise conclusion. Fix the measurement process before adjusting game sensitivity around the number.

A stable difference from the labeled DPI is a calibration clue, not proof of defective hardware. Confirm with manufacturer tools or an independent method when accuracy matters.

Keep the device, platform, connection, browser or game build and the previous setting beside the result. If the observation changes, restore the baseline and change one variable. That procedure is more valuable than a precise-looking number without context.
